What affects dog grooming prices?
Dog size and breed
Larger dogs take more time, product and physical effort. Breed also matters - a Poodle or Bichon Frise takes considerably longer than a Labrador of the same size.
Coat condition
A matted or neglected coat requires significantly more time and specialist work. Many groomers charge a dematting fee or decline heavily matted coats for welfare reasons.
Location
London and the South East command noticeably higher prices than the rest of the UK. Rural areas may have lower average prices but also less competition.
Mobile vs salon
Mobile groomers typically charge a premium to cover travel time, fuel, van costs and the convenience they offer. Most clients are happy to pay extra for a door-to-door service.
Setting prices as a new groomer
Starting out, it can be tempting to undercut the local market to attract clients quickly. A small initial discount is reasonable, but avoid going too low - it is hard to raise prices significantly later without losing clients, and low prices undervalue the skill and training that goes into professional grooming.
Research your nearest three or four competitors and price within 10–15% of their rates. Factor in your actual costs: products, insurance, equipment depreciation, premises, and your own hourly wage.
Review prices at least annually. Small, regular increases are far easier for clients to accept than infrequent large jumps. Give existing clients advance notice and a brief explanation.
